Country singer Chely Wright confesses she’s gay
After swirling rumors about her sexuality, country music singer Chely Wright (39) admits she’s gay. With her memoir, Like Me, soon to be released, Wright wonders if she’ll be accepted by the country music community:
Historically, we’ve never had an out country music artist, ever,” she told Access Hollywood. “Early in my life I went through what I think a lot of gay people go through, thinking that I could change and pray it away.”
Wright also discusses her relationship with country singer Brad Paisley:
“When I realized he was wanting forever with me… I could see the damage I was doing to him, and I cut him off completely, cold turkey,” she said.
Sadly, Wright even considered suicide in 2006:
“I was looking at myself in a mirror… as I was about to do it,” she told Access Hollywood. “I just looked at myself and something snapped and I started to cry… and I realized I have too much to live for.”
Her new album, Lifted off the Ground, comes out May 4 and she’s hopeful her career won’t be hurt by her coming out:
“I may lose my career in country music, that will break my heart, but it’s okay,” she confessed. “I have a lot of different pieces of my heart that matter and that’s what I’ve come to learn.”
